Which Country Uses Artificial Intelligence to Select Its Youth Athletes?
It might sound like science fiction, but it’s very much a reality: some countries are already using artificial intelligence (AI) to identify athletic talent from a young age. The goal is simple — to find future champions before they even know it themselves, using data, algorithms, and predictive analysis to streamline the selection process.
The Most Notable Case: China
One of the most prominent examples is China, a country that has been investing heavily in technology applied to elite sport. In several regions, AI systems are being used to analyse the physical, motor, and cognitive traits of children and teenagers in order to determine which sport they might excel in.
The data collected can include height, reaction speed, coordination, strength, endurance, and even bone structure. Based on this information, algorithms predict which disciplines best match each individual’s profile. Coaches can then decide whether it’s worth developing that young person further in a specific direction.
Benefits or Risks?
There’s no doubt that technology can help identify talent that might otherwise go unnoticed. It also allows training to be tailored from an early stage and avoids wasting time on sports where an athlete may not be naturally suited.
However, the use of AI in this context does raise important ethical questions. To what extent is it appropriate to shape a child’s development based on an algorithm? And what about those who don’t fit the "ideal profile" but have passion, discipline, and the ability to improve?
The Future of Sport?
What’s clear is that artificial intelligence is already part of modern sport — and its presence will only grow. From talent detection to personalised training and injury prevention, its influence is becoming increasingly significant.
As with any tool, it all depends on how it’s used. When it comes to young athletes, the key will be to combine data-driven insights with human judgement, proper mentoring, and above all, respect for the personal development of each individual.
