The Smartwatch That Predicts Whether You're at Your Peak to Compete
Technology is no longer just a supporting tool in the world of sport — it now wants to help make decisions for us. The latest development comes from smartwatches, which have gone far beyond simply counting steps or tracking heart rate. Some high-end models are now equipped with algorithms capable of predicting whether you’re in optimal condition to compete.
How Does It Work?
These devices continuously collect data about your body and activity: sleep quality, heart rate variability (HRV), stress levels, oxygen saturation, body temperature, accumulated fatigue, and more. Based on this information, the algorithm calculates a “readiness score” or “fitness level,” indicating whether you're ready to perform at your best — or if it might be wiser to take it easy.
Some brands display this using colour-coded indicators (green, amber, red), giving you a quick visual cue. The goal is to help you perform better and, crucially, avoid injuries caused by overtraining or accumulated fatigue.
Reliable or Overhyped?
While these predictions aren't perfect, they’re becoming increasingly accurate — especially when the user wears the device consistently, allowing it to build a detailed personal baseline. That said, it’s still an estimate. It doesn’t replace a coach’s judgement, nor how you actually feel on the day.
A Passing Trend or the Future of Athletic Performance?
All signs suggest that these kinds of features are here to stay. As sensors become more precise and algorithms more refined, smartwatches could become genuine strategic tools for both amateur and professional athletes.
Even so, the key remains the same: use technology as support, not as a substitute. Pay attention to what your watch says — but don’t forget to listen to your body too.
